What are the policies for members?
- during the day (especially helpful for home school students)
- PD Days (not common and must be requested)
- after school sessions are extremely limited as there is high demand and Tara has her own children who have activities after school
- weekends or holidays (in rare occasions - added cost, as she reserves these days for family time)
Unique needs:
- Tara follows guidelines provided by parents if there is an IEP or other personalized plan in place for each child
- Tara is able to provide session summaries and assessments to teaching and other support staff upon request. Parents will always get the session summary after each session.
- Tara is able to contact teachers or SERTs to help support the student even more (she works as a team with all staff to support the child) - upon request from the parents
Options include:
- online/virtual sessions (an interactive, online teaching platform)
- in person at Tara's home (home classroom, with a lot of natural light)
Supplies needed:
- if in person sessions, nothing is required by you
- if virtual, I will provide you with a list of resources you'll want to have on hand (including a decent wifi connection, chrome book, iPad or computer in order to have your child work virtually with Tara)
Cost (2023 prices):
- grade level screening (Acadience Reading K-6 Screening)
- $100 (30-40 minute standardized testing and complete data analysis-which takes me up to 2 hours to complete after the session with your child. I will also provide you with recommendations for next steps)
- this screening tells us if your child could benefit from my services or not
- having this screening does not get done for all students, it is intended for grade level students to see if they struggle at their current grade. If this screening shows they are below or well below benchmarks, it may be recommended that you explore intensive support for your child to close the gaps to ensure a greater likelihood that they will reach literacy goals as they move through grades.
- this screening tells us if your child could benefit from my services or not
- initial, complete assessment $150 (75-90 minutes plus additional 2-3 hours for data analysis and recommended programming)
- required for all new students
- this assessment can be broken down into 2 or 3 sessions if 1 session is too long
- 30 min sessions - $40
- 45 min sessions - $50
- 60 min sessions - $60
- 75 min sessions - $75
- 90 min sessions - $90
- 120 min sessions (rare) - $120
Session costs include:
- resources (in person resources, virtual online resources will be provided with a list of items that a student should have at home to use)
- home resources for practice (for students that are in person each week), online practice for virtual students
- online practice work/games created with your child in mind
- planning time (unique for your child)
- brief after session summaries housed on our portal that are password protected for only you to see (we can add teachers or other support staff at your request)
- *reading intervention tutoring is HST exempt
Tara is Orton-Gillingham trained and the Orton-Gillingham approach is a proven system that allows for the following:
- Multi-sensory - using tools to help learners through visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and tactile ways.
- Phonetic-Alphabetic - did you know there are 44 sounds in the english language? Did you also know that there are multiple spellings (over 100) of many of the sounds which make it even more difficult for children to learn to read and write? As your child continues to learn strategies to decode (and endcode) words, they will be able to apply the rules of our language and analyze what is written for greater understanding.
- Synthetic-Analytic - Synthetic means learning the smallest unit of sound (phoneme) and the written symbol for each (graphemes). Analytic is about breaking down a whole word into its parts, which help with decoding.
- Structured - lessons will be taught and presented in an organized manner, that will also help with previous learning and next steps to introduce new learning concepts which will develop competent, independent learners.
- Sequential - moving from simple concepts of our language to more complex concepts. As the student masters skills they will move on to the next steps until all steps are mastered.
- Repetitive - this promotes word recognition, reading fluency and reading comprehension
- Cumulative - each step is an essential building block for the next step
- Cognitive - as the student learns and understands the rules of our language they will apply those learned skills to become a proficient reader, an accurate speller, and a creative writer.
- Diagnostic - as the instructor, I will continuously monitor the student's progress and make changes as needed
- Prescriptive - as the instructor, I will take the diagnostic information and plan personalized, subsequent lessons to best target and promote further learning in areas of need.
I am here as your partner in your child's success.
